Shaping a Greener Future: Afrigetics’ Contribution to Pelargonium sidoides Biodiversity Management
It feels good to make a difference.
The vision and mission of our company have evolved significantly over the years. We have come to a collective realisation that Afrigetics Botanicals is, at its core, a conservation-driven business with a strong commitment to the sustainable harvesting of herbs.
Recently Afrigetics Botanicals also became one of only two companies in the world with a bioprospecting license to trade in Pelargonium sidoides, a milestone that means that we are compliant with the #NEMBA (National Environmental Management: Biodiversity Act) which is legislation enacted to promote the conservation and sustainable use of the country’s biodiversity.
I am happy to report that Afrigetics Botanicals has been engaging with South Africa’s Department of Environmental Affairs in shaping the Pelargonium sidoides Biodiversity Management Plan over the past two years and that we are one final step closer to having a national biodiversity management plan for Pelargonium sidoides published in the government gazette. Myself, Finn Rautenbach, and Khanya Bam from Afrigetics Botanicals have all been actively involved in this process, contributing to the development of guidelines that ensure the long-term sustainability of Pelargonium sidoides in South Africa.
Our involvement in this initiative holds significant value, as we are dedicated to ensuring that the traditional knowledge holders receive fair and equitable benefits for their invaluable wisdom concerning plant medicines. By aligning our actions with our core values, we are proud to contribute to the preservation of indigenous knowledge and the sustainable future of our natural resources.
Stay tuned for more updates on our journeys into Pelargonium sidoides and sustainability solutions as we continue to drive positive change in the conservation and sustainability landscape. Together, we can make a lasting impact.
